Other changes announced by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert included Rear Adm. David Gale, who has been tapped to succeed Lewis. Gale currently serves as the deputy commander for surface warfare and SEA-21 at NAVSEA. SEA-21 oversees the lifecycle management of surface ships.

The program executive officer for ships, based at Washington Navy Yard in the nation’s capital, is responsible for surface shipbuilding on a broad range of classes, including surface combatants like destroyers, amphibious ships, logistical support ships and other vessels.

SPAWAR is the Navy’s command for the acquisition of communications and information technology systems and is based in San Diego.

Rear Adm. Lawrence Creevy, the commander of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, was named to replace Gale. And Capt. Jon Hill, a major program manager in the program executive office for integrated warfare systems (PEO IWS) at NAVSEA, has been chosen for his first star and to become the program executive officer for PEO IWS. He will be replacing Rear. Adm. Joseph Horn.
