The Marine Corps has awarded Northrop Grumman [NOC] a $958 million deal for 30 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radars (G/ATOR) to move the program into full-rate production, the Pentagon announced Friday.
Northrop Grumman’s G/ATOR recently completed initial operational tests for the first two blocks of its new mobile 360-degree radar system, with six of the eight units previously delivered already in the field.
G/ATOR is the Marine Corps’ new advanced, multi-mission Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar designed to better defend against a growing array of short and medium range threats, including cruise missiles and rockets.
“The G/ATOR program office verified the systems met capability requirements and operated as designed,” a Marine Corps spokesperson recently told Defense Daily regarding recent evaluations for Block 1 last October and Block 2 in December.
The Marine Corps has an overall acquisition objective for 43 G/ATOR units.
A total of $194.7 million was obligated for procurement through the end of fiscal year 2019.
