Landsat-9, an Earth-imaging satellite that Orbital ATK [OA] is building for NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey, has undergone its preliminary design review, the company announced Aug. 8.

The review, which took place July 18 to 20 at an Orbital ATK plant in Gilbert, Ariz., demonstrated that the satellite meets all system and schedule requirements, the company said.

Landsat-9, the latest in the long-running Landsat series, will collect images and data for research in agriculture, land-use mapping, emergency response and disaster relief. It is slated for launch in late 2020.

Orbital ATK received a $130 million contract award for Landsat-9 in October 2016. It built three other Landsat satellites, including Landsat-8, which was launched in 2013.
