General Dynamics [GD] Advanced Information Systems (GD-AIS), was recently awarded a $10.2 million first-year contract of a multi-year award by the Navy to provide upgrades to the submarine weapons control system (WCS) portion of the AN/BYG-1 submarine combat system, the company reported.

GD-AIS will develop weapon control software and commercial off-the-shelf hardware upgrades for the AN/BYG-1 combat system on several classes of submarines. The AN/BYG-1 integrates the tactical control, weapons control and tactical network subsystems on United States Navy and Royal Australian Navy submarines, the company said.

The General Dynamics weapon-control system offering is based on the General Dynamics open architecture and open business model approach which facilitates system enhancements utilizing modular and open architectures and flexible business strategies to enhance competition, the company added.

“By leveraging our experience from our work on other U.S. Navy submarine weapon control contracts, we will deliver a highly reliable and innovative solution that will significantly improve the warfighter’s capabilities,” Lou Von Thaer, president, GD-AIS, said

The majority of work under this contract will be performed in Pittsfield, Mass., Fairfax, Va. and Middletown, R.I. If all options are exercised, work under this contract will be completed by December 2018.
