CSC [CSC] on Aug. 31 said it has received a potential 10-year, $1 billion contract from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to provide cloud services, data center consolidation and cloud migration capabilities.

The FAA first announced the contract with CSC on Aug. 28, saying the award is worth $108 million over 10 years. CSC said the initial single award indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract is for $109 million. The FAA said the contract will provide it with capabilities such as software as-a-service, platform as-a-service infrastructure, and collocation in  a “highly secure and resilient environment.”

CSC is responsible for integration and will provide its Agility Platform cloud management tool for the cloud deployment and to leverage data and services provided by its partners. The company’s subcontractors include Amazon’s [AMZN] Web Services business, Microsoft’s [MSFT] Azure cloud platform, and other strategic partners.

“Our work on FAA infrastructure and end-user service programs, including support for its migration to a cloud enterprise messaging system, gives us a hands-on understanding of the agency’s requirements and procedures,” Larry Prior, executive vice president and general manager of CSC’s North American Public Sector, said in a statement. “We’ll build on this experience to implement program requirements, minimize cloud implementation risks, reduce overall IT costs, and drive an effective cloud solution tailored to the FAA environment.”

The FAA said that moving away from its FAA-owned data centers to outsourced locations will increase efficiencies and flexibility while saving time and money, and make information sharing easier.  The agency said the program will be rolled out in phases over the next year or so with the immediate focus on assessing all current applications to determine which ones are suitable for the cloud.

After the infrastructure is established, the FAA will begin to migrate systems to the cloud, which will allow users to store and access information from any location on approved devices with an Internet connection.
