Bill Vass is the president and chief operating officer of Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc. and the chief technology officer of Sun's Global Accounts and Industry organization. Vass focuses on providing the U.S. government and elite global accounts with open, secure and efficient solutions to solve unique IT challenges for large scale organizations.

Vass brings more than 29 years of U.S. government and private sector IT leadership experience to Sun Federal. Previously, Vass served as chief information officer of Sun Microsystems, where he was responsible for all aspects of Sun's global IT infrastructure and line-of-business application development. Vass also served as Sun's chief security officer, vice president of corporate software services and vice president of IT operations.

Prior to joining Sun, Vass had a lengthy public service career. Vass worked in the Office of the Secretary of Defense Office of the CIO and was responsible for all acquisition and development, research and development, and consolidated software development and commercial off-the-shelf integration standards for over 6,800 IT systems with a $35.5B budget, as well as the Pentagon's IT environment, managing networks, servers and applications that supply voice, video and data across the defense networks.

Vass was the technical lead for the entire Department of Defense Y2K program, and represented the DoD to the U.S. Congress, the White House, and other nations. Prior to joining the Office of the CIO, Vass was CTO and technical lead for the U.S. Army personnel systems worldwide. Before his work in the DoD, Vass developed large scale IT engineering and business systems solutions for the oil and gas industry, defense systems integrators, and ocean engineering.

Vass has won numerous awards for his work in the private and public sectors to include Computer World as a Premier 100 Leader, and Federal Top 100 CIO. These awards honor those who envision innovative solutions to business challenges, and effectively manage and execute IT strategies. Vass also serves on number of technical advisory boards in government and private industry focused on large scale IT deployments, Web 2.0, SOA, and Cyber Security.
