Lieutenant Colonel Chafos has served for the past year on the Army Cyberspace Task Force, Department of the Army Staff.  Prior to this assignment, he commanded the 742nd Military Intelligence Battalion (Network Warfare) at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.  His previous assignments include:

•    National Security Agency Director’s Fellow, Fort Meade, Maryland
•    Senior Analyst, Multi-National Force-Iraq, Camp Slayer, Baghdad, Iraq, Operation IRAQI FREEDOM
•    Operations and Training Officer (S3), 704th Military Intelligence Brigade, Fort Meade, Maryland
•    Aide-de-camp to the Commanding General, 1st Armored Division, Bad Kreuznach, Germany
•    Operations and Training Officer S3, 501st Military Intelligence Battalion, Dexheim, Germany
•    Commander, C Company, 501st Military Intelligence Battalion, Camp McGovern, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Operation JOINT GUARD/FORGE, and Dexheim, Germany
•    All-Source Intelligence Chief, Analysis and Control Element (ACE) Eagle Base, Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR and Bad Kreuznach, Germany
•    Intelligence and Security Officer (S2), 2nd Brigade, 2nd Armored Division, Fort Hood, Texas

Born in Saint Paul and raised in Rochester, Minnesota, Timothy A. Chafos was commissioned a second lieutenant of Military Intelligence in 1989 from Georgetown University in Washington, District of Columbia, where he was a Distinguished Military Graduate.  Lieutenant Colonel Chafos holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.  An Olmsted Scholar, he holds Master’s degrees in European Studies and European Politics from the University of Siena in Siena, Italy.  He also holds a Master’s degree in Military Arts and Sciences in Strategy from the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Army Strategist (6Z) skill identifier.  His military education includes the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course, the Military Intelligence Officer Advanced Course, the Signals Intelligence/Electronic Warfare Officer’s Course and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. 

Lieutenant Colonel Chafos’ awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (two awards), the Iraq Campaign Medal, the NATO Medal and the parachutist’s badge.
