Brig. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson is the Deputy Director for Global Effects and the War on Terrorism, Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate, Joint Staff, the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. She is responsible for all aspects of developing, coordinating, refining, and assessing U.S. military and national strategies related to cyberspace operations and strategic effects. She routinely provides advice to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and represents the Joint Staff and the U.S. military at government interagency meetings on a broad scope of national security.
A distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1981, General Johnson completed graduate studies as a Rhodes Scholar before earning her pilot wings in 1984. She has served in various assignments in air mobility, airlift and tanker flying operations and training, academic instruction and personnel. She has commanded the 9th Air Refueling Squadron, the 97th Operations Group and the 22nd Air Refueling Wing. The general commanded a deployed air refueling squadron in Operation Southern Watch and an air refueling wing in support of operations Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. She has served as the Air Force aide to the President, and as an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Associate Air Officer Commanding, U.S. Air Force Academy. General Johnson also served as Director of Personnel for Air Mobility Command, a major command of 58,000 civilian and military Airmen. Prior to this assignment, she served as the Director of Public Affairs, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force in Washington, D.C.
Brig. Gen. Johnson has been selected for reassignment as Director, Strategy, Policy, Programs and Logistics (TCJ5/4), Headquarters U.S. Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill.
