Over the past year the Transportation Security Administration has continued to install hundreds of Advanced Technology X-Ray systems at the nation’s airports and soon hopes to take further advantage of what those platforms have to offer by introducing the capability to detect liquids. In addition, the agency has expanded its ongoing pilot testing of millimeter wave-based Whole Body Imaging systems to include primary screening at the checkpoint.
Several companies have contracts from TSA to further develop their high-speed Explosive Detection Systems that will include fixed-gantries. What may TSA be thinking in terms of the development of the new high-speed EDS versus continued upgrades to existing EDS technology that is increasing the throughput of these machines?
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate continues to investigate ways to do stand-off detection for explosives, seeking ways to speed passenger throughput at checkpoints. The S&T branch is also exploring ways to improve the software in EDS, including the use of third-parties who could possibly enhance explosive detection through the development of new software algorithms.
- What may TSA have planned for advancing the capabilities of its AT X-Ray systems?
- What may be TSA and DHS be learning about the use of Whole Body Imaging systems in both primary and secondary screening roles and what may be ahead for this and similar technology?
- What else is TSA doing at the checkpoint to improve its capabilities to detect weapons and explosives?
- What has DHS S&T learned about doing stand-off detection and what lies ahead?
- How is DHS S&T helping to improve the capabilities of AT X-Ray and EDS systems and what help does it need from industry?
