The State Department approved a possible $70 million Foreign Military Sales (FMS) request to Egypt for Sentinel AN/MPQ-64F1 Radars and related equipment, training, and support.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the potential sale on Sept. 16, the agency said Monday.

The sale would include eight Sentinel AN/MPQ-64F1 Radars and software and training, spares and support equipment, technical manuals, Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System (SINCGARS) VRC-92E Radios, and 16 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) Ml 152 with Shelter Carrier Kit. The estimated value of the major defense equipment (MDE) in the sale is $40 million.

Other parts of the FMS include U.S. government and contractor support, training and other associated support, equipment and services.

The primary contractor for this sale is Thales Raytheon Systems, a joint venture formed by Raytheon [RTN] and Thales. The joint venture, equally owned by both companies, focuses on air operation command and control systems, surveillance radars, and ground-based weapon locating radars.

Egypt would use the equipment to expand its existing air defense architecture to counter air attack threats. This would also contribute to the country’s military goal of updating its capabilities while enhancing interoperability among Egypt, the U.S., and other allies, DSCA said.
