Verizon [VZ] said last week that a Pentagon agency has completed migration to one of its unified communication platform, resulting in the elimination of two legacy systems for a next-generation communications solution.

The unnamed Department of Defense office integrated the unified communication platform under the “Everything Over IP” initiative, which was led by Verizon and engineering partners Ribbon Communications, Black Box and Visioneering.

“This significant transformation lets the user community operate using a communications system that addresses their IT needs now – and is scalable into the future,” Sonya Cork, Verizon Enterprise Solutions’ vice president of sales, said in a statement. “The integration and migration of the entire system was a huge task, and it speaks to the tightly coordinated efforts of Verizon and its partners Ribbon, Black Box, and Visioneering, working closely with the agency’s leadership.”

The new platform will allow for integration of voice, video and instant messaging communication within one solution, while offering improved cyber security standards, according to Verizon.

Verizon deployed the platform using the Ribbon Communications JITC-certified application server, which allowed DoD to update its communication system while maintain existing endpoints.

Using Ribbon Communication’s JITC-certified Application Server for the deployment, the department was able to replace the core of its communications infrastructure while leveraging its existing endpoints and using standards-based technology going forward.
