Passport Systems, Inc., has received a $1 million Phase I contract from the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) to conduct a preliminary design under the Intelligent Radiation Sensor Systems (IRSS) program, which is aimed a developing a wireless network of radiation detection devices that can be worn by first responders. The radiation detection devices would be purchased off-the-shelf and require minimal modifications, a Passport Systems official tells TR2. The contract has a potential value of $4 million if all options are exercised. If successful, the development would result in an Advanced Technology Demonstration. The IRSS effort is aimed at demonstrating the ability of a networked system of detectors to optimize the detection, localization and identification of radiological threats, including special nuclear materials and certain medical and industrial isotopes.
