The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for the Time Recorded Ubiquitous Sensor Technologies (TRUST) Project, which is focused on detecting the presence of dangerous cargo and anomalous substances while operating inside a cargo shipping container from the time it is packed and sealed overseas until it reaches its U.S. port of destination, assumed to be a maximum of 21 days, exploiting the long dwell times associated with such voyages. Some of the project’s goals include the development and demonstration of innovative detection system that can operate without intervention as an in-situ device to detect and identify weapons of mass destruction threats, contraband, and anomalous substances contained within a sealed maritime shipping container, a single system operating within the container with out interfering with loading and lifting operations, can collect and monitor a sample that characterizes all the interference within the shipping container during transit, can alert a positive detection during transit, and can communicate with a physical interface mounted outside the container such as the Marine Asset Tag Tracking System.
