President Obama sent Congress a fiscal 2010 defense budget proposal that would slash or eliminate many procurement programs, from Army vehicles to Air Force strike fighter planes, from missile defense systems to the planned Transformational Satellite (TSAT) program, and much more.
But some members of Congress are dismayed by these eye-opening budget cuts. Will the president’s budget survive on Capitol Hill? Or will Congress decide to override his reductions and rescue imperiled programs?
While Congress is moving ahead with defense authorization bills, a veto threat from President Obama leaves key issues in doubt. And Congress has yet to pass appropriations measures that actually provide the money for defense procurement programs to spend. Myriad key acquisition issues remain unresolved.
Topics of discussion include:
- What is the outlook for the long and bitterly hard-fought Air Force purchase of a new aerial refueling tanker aircraft?
- What will Congress' stance be on the Ballistic Missile Defense programs?
- Will the multi-service F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program see cutbacks in the number of aircraft produced, as President Obama proposes?
- Will the F-22 Raptor superstealth fighter production be cut off at 187 aircraft?
- Can The Boeing Co. retain its CSAR-X rescue helicopter contract?
- Will Congress revive the VH-71 presidential transport helicopter program, or will Obama have the last word in killing the program?
- Will the Navy continue procuring cutting-edge DDG-1000 destroyers, or stop production at just three ships?
- Will costs be reduced for the two types of Littoral Combat Ships, so that 55 of them will be built?
- Will vehicles be restored to the Army Future Combat Systems program?
Defense Spending in the Obama Administration will provide accurate, informed and knowledgeable insights & analysis of what may lie ahead for the President's defense spending budget.
