DHS Awards DropBox $2M for Straddle Carrier Portal with Rad Detection

The Department of Homeland Security Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office has awarded Kentucky-based DropBox, Inc. a $2.2 million contract to provide on-dock rail straddle carrier portal (ODRSCP) systems equipped with radiation detection technology. The system helps DHS solve the problem of screening cargo containers for potential radiological threats when they are being transferred from a ship to a train using a straddle carrier. Currently, some containers are selected for radiation screening. In these cases, the straddle carrier puts a container down in a designated area for screening by hand carried devices. With the DropBox solution, the straddle carrier just drives between the portal, which includes radiation detection panels that automatically screen for radiological materials without having to stop. Typically, cargo leaving a sea port by truck is quickly screened by driving through an automated radiation portal monitor. But transshipped cargo doesn’t follow the same path out of the port, making it more difficult to screen for potential threats. DropBox will supply multiple units of its monitors. The company says it plans to add up to 30 full-time jobs for the new work, which has been in development for nine years. DropBox’s ODRSCP has been tested at the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site, the Port of Virginia in Norfolk, and the Port of Tacoma in Washington, where it is currently in operation.
