Smiths Nabs Huge Order for High-Speed EDS

Smiths Detection says it has received a contract from Germany’s Frankfurt Airport to provide 35 of its high-speed HI-SCAN 10080 XCT explosive detection systems (EDS) for hold baggage screening, the largest single order the company has ever received for the system. The systems will enable the airport to upgrade to Europe’s Standard 3 EDS, and allow for upgrades to meet future requirements to identify evolving threats such as homemade explosives. The XCT technology combines X-Ray and computed tomography and advanced detection algorithms and supports throughput of up to 1,800 bags per hour. Deliveries will occur between 2018 and 2021. The contract includes an eight year service agreement. The value of the award wasn’t disclosed but EDS systems typically cost about $1 million per unit.

OSI Receives $31 Million in Orders for ETD, EDS, and ZBV Systems

OSI Systems [OSIS] says its Rapiscan Systems division has received multiple orders worth a combined $31 million for its explosive trace detection (ETD), explosive detection systems (EDS), and ZBV mobile cargo and vehicle screening systems. One set of orders, worth $16 million, is for ETD systems for multiple customers, including several airlines to meet a recent Department of Homeland Security directive for enhanced screening on U.S.-bound passenger flights. The sales are related to a directive in July from the Department of Homeland Security requiring enhanced screening of passengers at more than 200 last points of departure to the U.S. from overseas airports. OSI says it has boosted production, installation, training and program management teams to support increased demand as a result of the directive. Separately, Rapiscan has received a $6 million order from an international logistics and air cargo company for multiple units of the RTT 110 explosive detection system. The system has also been sold to some foreign airports for screening of checked bags. The RTT system features a fixed gantry to provide 3-D imaging. The final order, worth $9 million, is for ZBV mobile cargo and vehicle screening systems. OSI didn’t disclose the customers for any of its new orders.
