United Technologies Corp. [UTX] yesterday said that Louis Chenevert, the company’s president and CEO, has been elected to succeed George David as chairman of the company beginning Jan. 1, 2010.

Chenevert, 52, became president of UTC and a board member in 2006, initiating the leadership transition at the multi-industrial company. He succeeded David, 67, as CEO last year.

“The board is delighted with Louis’ growth into these most senior responsibilities and looks forward to years of his continued and exceptional leadership,” Richard McCormick, UTC’s lead director, said in a statement.

David has been with UTC for 34 years, including 14 as CEO. He will remain as a consultant and adviser to the company for 2010.
