TSA Issues RFI, Plans Industry Day for 3-D Volumetric Tomosynthesis Solutions

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has released a Request for Information (RFI) and plans to host an Industry Day regarding 3-D Volumetric Tomosynthesis solutions at passenger checkpoints to determine if there are current or future technologies for delivering cost efficient solutions for screening applications, specifically to screen carry-on bags. TSA is interested in information from all parties, including manufacturers as well as those researching components and subsystems. The agency says that its vision of the Next Generation Checkpoint foresees passengers walking through at a normal pace with out divesting clothing or shoes, or removing any liquids or electronics from carry-on bags, although there will still be requirements for screening of people and their bags. It also says that “screen-while-walk) means that carry-on baggage will be analyzed by next-generation X-Ray screeners “at a much faster rate at Tier IV requirements, and with a false alarm rate much lower than tat of current AT-2 (Advanced Technology-2 X-Ray) scanner,” which means the need for visual inspection of bags will be “greatly reduced. TSA’s Office of Security Capabilities (OSC) will host a Technology Conference on June 30 at its Transportation Security Integration Facility located at Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC, to discuss present and future checkpoint scanners, challenges and needs, the current RFI, and an overview of the Mission Analysis Division within OSC.
