The Army yesterday lifted its stop work order to BAE Systems, which can now begin to make the transition  to operating and managing the Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP), Va., from ATK [ATK].

“BAE Systems is pleased and honored to be selected to manage, operate and maintain the Radford Army Ammunition Plant,” said Dave Herr, president of BAE Systems Support Solutions, late yesterday.

Last May, BAE  was awarded a 10-year, $850 million contract to manage the Radford plant instead of incumbent ATK [ATK] (Defense Daily, Aug. 22).

ATK protested the award, and the Army reopened the competition, with each company resubmitting bids.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) late Jan. 23 notified ATK it denied its pre-award protest related to the Operation and Maintenance of the Radford Army Ammunition Plant (RFAAP).

The GAO rejection of the protest allowed the Army to lift the stop work order.

Herr said, “We look forward to beginning the transition. Our team is eager to provide the customer and community innovative ideas and cost-effective solutions, along with our proven track record of safe and secure facility operations. BAE Systems is also excited with the opportunity to partner with the Army, local government staff, and Radford’s highly skilled and dedicated workforce.”

ATK is under contract to operate RFAAP through June 30, the company said in a statement. “We remain committed to operating the facility at the highest level of dedication to quality, safety, and environmental stewardship.”
