Airbus has been commissioned to install new information technology (IT) infrastructure at NATO’s Allied Air Command headquarters at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, the company said Tuesday.

The work was commissioned by the German procurement authority, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), acting on behalf of NATO.

NATOThe contract goal is to expand and modernize the IT infrastructure of NATO’s Secret LAN (NS), Mission Secret LAN (MS), and Public LAN (PA). The work involves virtualizing user workstations and implementing a voice over IP solution, Airbus said in a statement. A comprehensive training program for virtualization is also included in the contract.

Before Airbus was commissioned for this project, a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) concept was designed and implemented on the bases of blade servers and VMware Horizon with NATO Ramstein as part of the Urgent Requirements 2 (UR2) project to form the basis for the UR5 project, the company said.

The Allied Air Command is responsible for monitoring the air space over North Germany, the Baltic Sea, and the North Sea as well as controlling NATO air operations.

The contract work has already started and will be concluded by mid-2006, Airbus said.
